Meet Barry Dewar. He's lived in Kamloops for 12 years!
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I previously lived in Osoyoos but have now been in Kamloops for 12 years.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Coach, Ed Patterson. He’s a smart hockey person and a phenomenal coach.
What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Safeway on the North Shore.
Describe yourself in one word.
Honorable.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Cape Town in South Africa to see my daughter.
What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Kamloops Storm hockey.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Helping mould and develop young men become better people while building a solid character foundation.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Playing sports with my brothers and father.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
With the Kamloops Storm. We work with various charities in the community including SPCA, St. John Ambulance, Kidsport, Kamloops Minor hockey and Jumpstart, just to name a few.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Poverty and homelessness.
Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
The Thompson River.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
I’d like to see a more diverse economy to help the disadvantaged in our community.
What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The people.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Go to Egypt again and to spend more time with children, grandchildren and my spouse.
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
We promote on Facebook a lot, and a bit on Twitter and LinkedIn.
What is the name of your business/organization?
Kamloops Storm Hockey team.
Why did you get into/start this business?
I initially started to help my son, but I continued because I wanted to continue to work with young men and help them develop life skills.
What is the goal of your business?
I consider it a mission, it is not for profit, but seeing some of our players move on in life and become successful is the reward.
What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Finding ways to get people to realize what a great thing we have in Kamloops with the Junior B hockey team. It’s a place for players to develop their skills in hockey and in life.
What do you always find yourself saying?
That hockey life moves in milliseconds and that we need to always be ready.
Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Believe in yourself and how to achieve your goals.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
My brother, I would like to spend a day with him at work. He has such a cool job and I would like to see how he handles the day to day business of Nascar.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It's about giving back. When we shop online or in another community, we lose that sense of family.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Raising four phenomenal children.
