In Focus | Gord Schmidt

Meet Gord. He's lived in Kamloops for 43 years!

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I was born in Chilliwack, but I have been in Kamloops since grade 6, a mere 43 years ago.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My wife Cheryl because she shares my sense of adventure, is a really good kisser, and after 31 years together she still laughs at my jokes.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Gord's Maytag because I love the name. But if I could pick a home business it would be a tie between Kamloops Art Party and BaseballGord.com.

Describe yourself in one word.
Hopeful.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Wrigley Field because it's Wrigley Field.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
There are so many. I love bartending at The Fox and Hounds. I love golfing at KGCC. This could be a long list. I love walking the dog in my neighbourhood — I love how safe I feel.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
There is not a chance that I will answer this honestly. Number 40something would be when I tried to go glass to glass of red wine with my Uncle Ed, then stood up to give a speech at a family reunion — sorry dad, but Grandma did forgive me.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Many years ago my brother-in-law gave me a series of self-help tapes from Wayne Dyer. I have listened to them probably 30 times over the years and I shudder to think what life would look like if I hadn't heard those tapes — they inspired me. That and watching Terry Fox and Rick Hansen and my kids excel in their chosen field and single moms everywhere.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Hugging my friend Robert Hume and jumping up and down when Paul Henderson popped that goal in — and on a school day!!!

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I must do more of this. My deepest apologies.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would say let's all be Buddhas for one year and just see how things go. Spread the love man.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
It’s a 5-minute walk from my door to either the river or the hills of Westsyde. Both places are great for reflecting on things gone by or dreaming about things to come.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
Let's be not just the Tournament Capital, but the Health Capital. Let us all get more active and let's keep supporting mental health.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
Kamloops has a positive vibe, and I can't describe it much more than that. The people are generally friendly and relaxed. And we have the best weather in the best country.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Meet Geddy Lee.
2. Strikeout my grandson when he is a teenager.
3. Break 80.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am a very lucky man and quite good at math, yet a terrible poker player. It just doesn't add up.

What is the name of your business/organization?
Baseball Gord.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I love baseball and I love painting. The two loves met and one decade later a business was born.

What is the goal of your business?
To give me some baseball experiences and sell a gazillion dollar's worth of merchandise.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Anxiety and depression.

What do you always find yourself saying?
I end too many sentences with the word 'but'.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
As you think so shall you be.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Geddy Lee because, since Lou Reed died, he is the coolest man on the planet and I would love to play catch with him.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Because we are neighbours and all need money.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Supplying over 500 fridges to people in Barriere in three days. It took every piece of physical and mental ability I had.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Aleece Laird because she selflessly helped me with my baseball project. Plus, over the years her business and marketing guidance has been invaluable. I keep telling her she should be our MP someday.

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Aleece Laird.
