In Focus | Kathy Price

Meet Kathy Price. She moved to Kamloops with her family in 1967 and other than a few years away at university, she has lived here since then.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband Kerry. We have so much in common and having been married for a very long time, we are really comfortable with each other and we have fun and we have interesting discussions and debates. His sense of humour keeps me laughing.

What do you always find yourself saying?
'That's awesome!'
I know I overuse it but I really do find so many things to be awesome!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
The Dalai Lama. I would hope that some of his wisdom and patience would rub off on me.

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by people who persist with a cause or endeavour in the face of what would seem to be extreme adversity.

What are three things on your bucket list?
I don't really have a bucket list. I usually think about all the things I'm going to enjoy about each day when I wake up in the morning and I really do love just being at home and here in Kamloops most of the time. We travel lots and there are many places I want to see still so we are gradually working away on that list.

Please tell us about a defining moment in your life.
The day I retired from working with the Kamloops School District for over 30 years. It was kind of a great pivot point where I was looking back on a career that I loved right up until the last day and looking forward to the excitement of retirement.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my children, my grandchildren and in general, doing what I can to improve the lives of as many children as I can, both here in Kamloops as well as in the wider world.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Although it was probably the hardest day, the day my first daughter was born was my favourite. Not that the two daughters that came after that wasn't also 'awesome' but the first time you bring another human being into the world, truly is a life-changing, epic day that begins your life as a parent and a lifetime of love that is indescribable.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
In my career, I am most proud of working with many other educators over many years to bring Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports into the school district. This systematic way of teaching school-wide expected behaviours is, I think the most positive impact I had on the most children during my career.

Where is your favourite place to dine in your city?
Mount Paul Family Restaurant.

What is your favourite activity or event in your city?
Ribfest!

What is the name of your business/organization?
Just before I retired I joined the Kiwanis Club of Kamloops.

What does your business/organization do?
We are a service club that raises funds and works on service projects that benefit the children of Kamloops and the world.

Where can people find you or your business online?
On the website!

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
We are always looking for new members so I'd love to see us continue to increase our membership each year. With increased numbers, we would be able to do even more projects and raise more funds.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Our Kamloops Kiwanis members are an ENTHUSIASTIC bunch of people that have fun raising money to support the children of Kamloops. We truly care about the children here and around the world.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
You are an amazing, small group of people who work hard all year to provide the best possible life for children here in Kamloops and around the world.

What makes you feel successful?
Tell us about it. I feel successful when I have accomplished something that I have set out to do. I volunteer with the Roots of Empathy organization as an instructor. I absolutely love this role and every time I teach a class, I feel like I am really making a difference.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Experts in the area of early childhood and infant development. I would have a conversation about the importance of supporting programs that enhance pre-natal and early childhood development and supporting programs such as Roots of Empathy or the many programs we support through the Kiwanis Club of Kamloops. All of which enrich and enhance the lives of children and in turn, society and the world.

If I could change one thing about the city you live in, it would be:
I would like to see even more development of trails and paths within the city limits that could be used for all types of non-vehicular travel.

What do you think makes your city great?
Kamloops is great because of the awesome people that live here. The fact that it is incredibly beautiful and clean and has a great climate and tons of recreational opportunities close by really doesn't hurt either!

My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
Carly Schmidt of Kamloops Art Party.
