Meet Maddison Hartloff. She was born in Woodbridge, ON, but moved to Kamloops six years ago. She is a passionate woman who loves being venturing through downtown Kamloops.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I was born and raised in Woodbridge, ON. I moved to Kamloops about six years ago and haven't looked back since!
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My partner Joel. He teaches me something new almost every day; he keeps me grounded, & always encourages me to do my absolute best.
What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Far & Wide. It's a gorgeous place, run by boss babes, who feature all sorts of amazing local artisans. I wish my whole house looked like that store.
Describe yourself in one word.
PASSIONATE.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
MEXICO!!! It's the home of my favourite food: Tacos. The home of my favourite beverage: Margaritas. It's honestly my happy place!
What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Just being outside! There are so many outdoor activities available in Kamloops; I can't pick just one!
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I threw up all over myself on National TV.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Being approached for creative guidance. When people started asking me for advice & assistance on their projects, it really validated everything that I have been working so hard at. It inspires me and pushes me to work even harder! I will do whatever I can to gain & understand the knowledge, just to be able to share it with others.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
IN REAL LIFE. That is the name of the YTV reality show I was on when I was a kid. Easily my favourite memory. Being on that show gave me the opportunity to experience so many things that a parent wouldn't normally allow a child to do. My parents pretty much signed my life away to participate in that show, and I can't thank them enough. Those memories will last a lifetime. Who else can say they flew an F18 fighter jet at 14 years old?
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I've been working with Kamloops Princess Parties for a few years now, and often get involved in the variety of community events that Kamloops has to offer. Dressing up as a Princess and interacting with the children is one of my favourite things to do. I've also donated a lot of my time to various theatre companies within Kamloops, and the TRU Actor's Workshop Theatre - whether it is through performance, costuming, or just offering a hand when needed.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Human Connection. I wish people actually cared more about each other.
Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Downtown Kamloops! I love strolling down the sidewalk with a coffee and a few shopping bags on my arm.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
The Arts Community! There is always talk about things we would like to happen - let's MAKE them happen!
What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The Community Events. Kamloops always puts on such amazing outdoor affairs with the best food, music, performances, and atmosphere. I love going to our markets & festivals.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Go to Machu Picchu & learn about the Incan civilization.
2. Own a mini farm.
3. Buy a home & retire in Mexico.
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm really competitive. Whether it's a card game, a sport, beer pong, or a reality show - I always want to win.
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
I am on all Social Media! You can follow my personal adventures @memoirsofmaddi OR follow my little needlework shop @tinyneedle. Both are frequently updated!
What is the name of your business/organization?
Tiny Needle Embroidery.
Why did you get into/start this business?
To help with my anxiety. It's something I love doing because it relaxes me & takes my mind off of everything else. And I get to be my own kind of creative.
What is the goal of your business?
To create handmade art that encourages individuality; combining a traditional craft with modern influence.
What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Anxiety. I didn't get diagnosed until I was in my twenties, but I have been dealing with it as long as I can remember. Because there is still a stigma around mental illness, sometimes the struggle includes dealing with that mindset too.
What do you always find yourself saying?
"Well..." OR "Classic."
Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Be a kind Human. You don't know the battles that people face on a daily basis.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
My grandparents. I haven't seen them since I moved out to BC & I miss them dearly (they live in Ontario). They played a huge role in raising me, and I've always been so close to them. As they get older, being so far away gets harder. I know we would all love a day to just sit in the sun and catch up.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
You are helping people who are helping you! You know the money you spend is going right back into their business or their pocket. Local businesses are also so GRATEFUL when you support them. There is love and hard work attached to every purchase.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Becoming the woman that I am today. It's been a long road, with many, many obstacles - but I am so proud of who I am & I can truly say that love myself.
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Joel Feenstra! He's the hardest working and most diversely talented man I know. He can do pretty much ANYTHING that is asked of him; if he doesn't know how he learns how within minutes. It's amazing watching him work.
