In Focus | Natasha Durning

Meet Natasha. She has lives in the Shuswap and frequents Kamloops often due to her business. She creates cozy creations out of yarn including toques, scarves, coffee sleeves and more!

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I technically call the Shuswap home in Lee Creek and have for over 20 years of my life with a few elsewhere mixed in there. Kamloops is where I do most of my shopping and a large portion of my business now.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My parents have to be at the top of this list for me. They are my biggest cheerleaders and I don't know what I would do without them.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Locally owned would be Sugar & Spice Beauty Bar, I've always had wonderful experiences with the women there. Because of my yarn obsession though Michaels see's me a lot and the people working there are always wonderful to deal with.

Describe yourself in one word.
Creative

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Scotland to explore more of my families history.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Hiking, I love the many options in Kenna Cartwright. Battle Bluffs is also a favourite.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Taking a sweater off to find that layer was the only one on its way off! This has happened more than once, still not fun.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
As I have become serious about my knitwear business I have also realized how many people I have supporting me. It has been the most amazing experience to see how my coworkers, friends, and family believe in what I am doing and what I make. It has given me the biggest boost to work even harder.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
While my parents were building our home my dad and I decided to do a special dinner for my mom. We were still living in a trailer on the property, the house has walls and a roof but no heating. We put together the kitchen table that was waiting in pieces and cooked up something and surprised her when she came home. I still love this memory and that home.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Any coffee shop.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
How welcoming the people are.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Visit Australia
Own my own home
Drive across Canada

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest

What is the name of your business/organization?
Infix Connection

Why did you get into/start this business?
I wanted to make my mom a blanket, it didn't work out that first time but I fell in love with knitting. It took a couple years on and off but I've fallen more and more in love with creating in this medium with yarn. It just makes me happy.

What is the goal of your business?
I want to build it to a full time career for myself. My big goals include teaching others and creating a space that allows younger generations to experience knitting and crocheting.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Too many ideas and not being able to focus on one at a time.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Always keep dreaming and believing in the possibilities of life.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
My best friend Amanda. We met when I lived in Vancouver. I moved back to the Shuswap and she's still out there and I miss her all the time but we just don't get to do as many visits as we'd like. You know it's real friendship though when the distance and time apart don't matter.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
I believe shopping locally is important because it supports our neighbours. You know where your product really came from and that is worth so much.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
I'd like to give a shout out to my friend Josh who just moved back to Kamloops and created a group called Adventure Kamloops. I've already met some seriously awesome people through it and love how simple and open it is for others to join and get involved.

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Josh Hoggan - Adventure Kamloops
