Another person dies as listeria outbreak linked to plant-based drinks continues

Another person has died due to the ongoing listeria outbreak linked to plant-based drinks.

There have now been 20 lab-confirmed illnesses associated with the Silk and Great Value products, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said in its latest update.

Thirteen of those cases were identified in Ontario, five in Quebec and one apiece in Alberta and Nova Scotia.

There have been 15 hospitalizations linked to the outbreak, which was declared on July 17.

People became sick between Aug. 2023 and July 2024, PHAC explained.

Most – 65 per cent – of the listeria cases have been among women, while 70 per cent have been among people aged 50 or older.

The full list of affected products can be found here.

Included are:

  • Great Value Almond Beverage Unsweetened Original

  • Great Value Almond Beverage Original

  • Great Value Almond Beverage Vanilla

  • Silk Almond Original

  • Silk Almond Unsweetened

  • Silk Coconut Original

  • Silk Oat Original

The products were sold by Danone Canada.

In a statement released last week, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said Danone Canada “immediately halted production and distribution” of the products from the Pickering, Ont. facility where they were produced.

“All affected products were made on a dedicated production line, which has been completely disassembled while inspection at the facility is ongoing,” CFIA explained.

“No production on this dedicated production line will restart until the necessary corrective measures are implemented and the CFIA is satisfied that any contamination has been identified and eliminated.”
