Alleged Kamloops assault suspect arrested after hours-long standoff

An assault suspect is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police in Knutsford on Tuesday.

The Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP received a call about an alleged assault in progress around 7 am on Tuesday, a news release said.

Once officers were on scene of the address on the 3000-block of Rose Hill Road, they were able to confirm that the victim had left the house and was safe.

However, responding officers were told a suspect may have access to weapons, including firearms.

Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in due to the “perceived risk” of the possible presence of those weapons.

The area was closed to the public as police and ERT responded.

After several hours, a suspect surrendered in the early afternoon and was taken into custody.

A police presence in the Knutsford area is expected to clear “shortly.”

An investigation is ongoing and the RCMP have not released many more details.

Any witnesses of the incident are asked to call the Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP detachment at (250) 314-1800 and refer to file 2024-32728.
