Missing Kelowna international student found dead

A Kelowna student who went missing earlier this month has been found dead, police have confirmed.

Mia Saito, who was from Japan, was reported missing on Jan. 8.

Police said on Jan. 9 that she may be “experiencing crisis.”

They also said they were worried about “concerning comments” the 20-year-old made before her disappearance.

Saito flew from Kelowna to Vancouver on Jan. 7, Kelowna RCMP said.

Vancouver Police Department (VPD), which took over the investigation, told KelownaNow that, “tragically,” she was later found dead.

Her death does not appear to be the result of a crime, VPD added. No further information was provided.

Kelowna RCMP told KelownaNow: "We offer our sincerest condolences to Mia’s family and friends during this difficult time."

A Jan. 12 post on an Instagram account containing photographs of Saito explained she “passed away due to an unexpected incident.”

The operator of the account said he was unable to provide any specific details about the death, however.

“Thank you everyone for helping me out with finding her,” he wrote.
